We saw him confess to a room full of people that he drugged. The uncertainty of everything also applied to the mystery that Sherlock had to solve, that of the serial killer Culverton Smith.įrom the beginning, we knew that Culverton Smith was the villain, that he was a killer. I'm amazed that the writers continue to surprise me, especially in a show where I know every detail matters. So who is Euros? Why is she so terrifying? Is Euros actually their sister? Will Sherrinford turn out to be a place or someone else, or is that her first name and Euros her middle name? Heck, is she another misdirection? In Sherlock Season 3 Episode 3, "His Last Vow", during Sherlock's goodbye to John, he recounts to John the story of the east wind, a "terrifying force that lays waste to all in its path, that seeks out the unworthy and plucks them from the earth." Was that a memory?Įuros said that her name was Greek for "the East wind." So really, we've had hints of this happening since Sherlock Season 3, as this brings to mind a story that Mycroft used to scare Sherlock as a child. There's also the fact that during his conversation with her on the bridge, during his withdrawal attack, he had a flash of a child running through water with a dog that looked suspiciously like Redbeard. However, he casually dismissed it as "letting herself go" due to her trauma, and as such, we dismissed it too. Sherlock noticed that the woman in his living room was different from the pictures of Faith Walker, noted the difference in her hair, her weight. That gave us enough time to forget the finer details of her face, and accept the prominent round glasses, brown hair and cane as belonging to the same person.Įven when we had reason to pay attention, we were easily misdirected. So even if this turns out to have been the final season, despite not living up to seasons past, this incarnation of the great detective does at least have a proper ending. The scene prior to her visit, where she's struggling to write the words down before she forgets, was deliberately blurry and unfocused. With no guarantee that there will be another season, the writers opted to wrap things up fairly neatly. With less intense plotting, there would be more time for the characters to breathe and bounce off each other. So what Sherlock has become now is an overwrought Superhero story, including a spunky sidekick, dastardly villains and even an Evil Lair.

Straightforward crime mysteries with witty banter have apparently been deemed too boring to hold the attention of a modern audience that suffers from attention-deficit disorder. My overall impression is that the writers are trying too hard to be clever.

It’s a shame because with two hard to nail down leads (Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman) there may not be much opportunity to course-correct and end the series on a high note. As the most recent season was co-written by Moffat and Gatiss, I guess both of them share both the praise and the blame, for a show that is still fun to watch but also running off the rails a bit. Co-creator Mark Gatiss writes episodes and stars as Sherlock’s brother. His plotting tends to be dense, sometimes in both meanings of that word. Because of an insatiable craving for layering twist upon twist, he does have a tendency to leave you scratching your head in the end, not convinced that it all hangs together. The experiments don’t always work, but when they do, the results are very entertaining. He combines breezily comedic scripts with an eagerness to come at stories from an odd angle. I really liked showrunner Steven Moffat’s work on the comedy series Coupling and on Doctor Who. The most recent season featured no less than two Super-villains with such insane levels of foresight and such mad planning skills that it’s hard to focus on the funny dialogues, as you get too distracted by all the eye-rolling you’re doing.

Sherlock’s intellect is hyped up to such a degree that only the most convoluted mysteries will do to challenge it. In a world where chaos theory does not seem to be a thing, Sherlock solves cases that grow more far-fetched as the series goes on. The current BBC incarnation of iconic British detective Sherlock Holmes is stylish, entertaining and increasingly silly.
